How Plastic Comb Binding Can Make Documents Stand Out

June 13, 2013 by Jeff McRitchie

/black-plastic-binding-combs-smWhen it comes to document finishing methods, you can’t go wrong with plastic comb binding. Not only is this method easy and surprisingly affordable, it can really help your documents stand out. This can help you impress your customers and make your company look more professional. Continue reading to discover how plastic comb binding can distinguish your work:

                1. Customization. One of the many reasons why people choose plastic comb binding is that the combs can be customized. You can have just about anything printed on the spine including your company’s name, the title of the work, a person’s name, a date, and more. You can choose between silk screening or foil stamping depending on what you want the text to look like and what your budget will allow.
                2. Color. Your documents need to look good whether you’re just using them in-house or plan on distributing them to people outside the company. Choosing plastic combs that are the right color(s) is one way to do so. These supplies are available in many terrific hues including black, white, blue, green, and so on. There are also translucent gel combs available if you want to give your work a different, more modern look. Whichever color and opacity you choose, it will distinguish your work and make it easy to recognize.
                3. Size. Plastic comb binding is a great choice if you want to bind documents of varying sizes. The majority of available supplies are designed for use with letter-sized books that are 8.5″ x 11″. However, there are also combs that can be used with legal-sized books (8.5″ x 14″) as well as spines that work with half-letter sized documents (5.5″ x 8.5″). You can also order custom-length supplies if needed. (A tip: make sure your binding machine has an open throat and disengageable dies if you want to bind work that’s not letter-sized.)
                4. Thickness. Plastic combs come in many different thicknesses so they’re good for both long and short documents. These supplies can bind items that are up to 2″ thick which is equal to about 425 pages. The thinnest ones are 3/16″ thick and can bind work that contains just 10 pages. However, try to remember to choose supplies that are about 1/16″ thicker than your documents. This will make it easier to turn the pages and it will be more difficult to accidentally tear them out. Your audience will appreciate having books that are easy to read again and again.

As you can see, there are a few ways that plastic comb binding can make your documents stand out. This is a great document finishing method for your reports, proposals, and financial records. You can also use it for more creative purposes, such as assembling photo collections and creative writing projects. Customizing these supplies as well as choosing ones that are the right size, thickness, and color will definitely make your work look great. Give plastic comb binding a try to see for yourself how it can help you out. Good luck!
