                Three Must-Have Office Devices

April 12, 2012 by Jeff McRitchie Leave a Comment

/fellowes-powershred-450m-smAll offices need the best machines and supplies to help them run smoothly and to keep productivity up. Here are three must-have devices for your office:

                • A paper shredder. Every office needs at least one paper shredder due to the rise in identity theft and the need to comply with federal privacy laws such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). These machines will shred your documents so you can keep important information private which will keep people’s identities safe and prevent your company from being sued for violating federal law. You can choose from strip- and cross-cut devices, and there are even shredders that can destroy items like floppy disks, CD’s, and credit cards. Shredders are available in a variety of sizes so there’s one that’s perfect for your needs whether you run a home-based business or work for a large company.
                • A binding machine. There are times when you need to put together a document for a meeting or presentation. When that happens, ordinary staples and report covers just aren’t going to cut it. That’s why every office needs a binding machine. These devices make it possible for you to produce a professional-looking document in just minutes so you can impress your boss, colleagues, and customers. There are several different types of binding machines including plastic comb, twin-loop wire, thermal, and color coil. (Plastic comb binding machines are some of the most popular devices.) These machines are available at every price point so it’s easy to find one that will fit your budget.
                • A laminator. If you’ve ever wanted to make your paper documents last longer, a laminator is what you need. These machines can encapsulate your documents in film so that they’ll last a long time. You can also use a laminator to protect photographs. There are two different types of laminators: pouch and roll. Generally speaking, pouch laminators are best for smaller documents (i.e. name tags, certificates) while roll laminators are great for larger items such as banners and signs. Be sure to consider getting one of these devices so you can make your documents last as long as possible.

Office Devices to Be Careful Around

January 13, 2011 by Jeff McRitchie Leave a Comment

It’s hard to imagine life without some of our most utilized office products such as scissors,005-Dahle-Vantage-Scissors2-ma laminators, and paper shredders. However, as helpful as these devices are, they can also be dangerous. Here are the office devices you should be careful around along with suggestions regarding their safe usage.

1.)    Any type of cutting device. Without a doubt, cutting tools can be some of the most dangerous office devices. This includes scissors/shears, rotary trimmers, and stack and guillotine cutters. One false move with one of these items could easily cause an injury so you need to be very careful when you’re using them. A lot of it boils down to common sense. (Such as, “don’t run with scissors.”) Also, there are so many cutting tools that have safety features to help you prevent injuries. For example, rotary trimmers often have blades that are encased in plastic so that you won’t accidentally run your fingers over the blade. The best guillotine cutters have a spring-loaded blade and a latch hook to keep the blade in place. And stack cutters often require you to use both hands when cutting so that your hands without them getting them trapped near the blade. Most of all, common sense is often the most important component in staying safe when cutting.  As long as you have that, you should be able to cut without any issues.

2.)    Laminators. Of all the document finishing methods to choose from, laminating is one of the most popular. It’s not too difficult, it’s pretty speedy, and it’s something the whole family can get involved in. However, you need to be careful when laminating, especially when you’re working with a roll laminator. Not only can these devices become extremely warm to the touch, they can also pose a  problem due to their rollers. Hands and fingers can get stuck between the rollers and children in particular are at risk for this. Luckily, you can prevent disaster from occurring by staying mindful of the situation and keeping at eye on everyone (including yourself) using the machine. Some laminators do have safety shields so you should choose a device with this feature if you’ll be laminating around kids.

3.)    Paper and multimedia shredders. It’s probably no surprise to see paper and multimedia shredders on this list. The shredder is one of the most dangerous office devices invented since it’s basically just a machine designed to chew things up. Depending on the device, you’ll be able to shred paper, CD’s, credit cards, and so on, so you can imagine how powerful shredders are. These machines can really do damage if you’re not careful. The best way to ensure a safe shredding experience is follow the manufacturer’s directions and keep the machine away from kids and even pets. Most shredders have some sort of safety feature (such as an interlock switch), so be sure the machine you choose has one with which you’re comfortable.

All of these office devices are helpful but you need to be careful when using them. Good luck with your work and stay safe!

Office Devices That Are Good for Home Use

January 13, 2011 by Jeff McRitchie Leave a Comment

Did you know that there are a lot of office supplies and machines that can be used at home? 3250005-maAnd that they go way beyond the ordinary (computers, pens, etc.)? If not, you’re going to soon because this article is all about which of these items are perfect for use at home whether you have a home office or not. Let’s take a look at what you can get some use out of….

                • A paper shredder. If you’ve been throwing away your junk mail, correspondence, and other documents, you’re unfortunately a target for identity theft. Identity theft can be emotionally and financially devastating, so you need to protect yourself the best you can. Using a paper shredder is definitely the way to go. There are a lot of ones designed for personal use that can help you keep your identity to yourself.
                • A comb binding machine. Comb binding machines make it easy to put together documents for school assignments, professional use, and more. Having one of these at home can be really helpful if someone in the household is attending school or if you just want to be able to put together books for a variety of occasions. The supplies needed for this binding style are pretty inexpensive and there are many affordable machines available.
                • A pouch laminator. You don’t hear about people using laminators at home very often which is disappointing to say the least. That’s disappointing because they have so many uses. You can use one to laminate recipe cards, artwork, calendar pages, luggage tags, important pages, and more. Plus there are laminators that can help you make stickers for use when you’re scrapbooking or doing some other type of craft.
                • A whiteboard. Whiteboards are important communication tools in schools and workplaces. You can use one at home too, especially since they come in both large and small sizes. A whiteboard can be used to keep track of grocery lists, chores, appointments, and phone numbers. You can even leave messages for other household members on one.
                • A rotary trimmer. If you’ve ever tried to cut a straight line with scissors, you have some idea of how difficult it can be. However, you can get straight lines with very little effort by using a rotary trimmer. These cutters can be used for school projects, clipping coupons, and crafts. A lot of them have fully enclosed blades so children can use them with supervision.
                • A stapler and a hole punch. Finally, stapler and hole punches are perfect for most homes, especially those containing students. These devices allow you to fasten documents and prepare them for storage in three-ring binders. They’re really helpful and can help you (and your housemates and/or kids) stay organized.

Office devices aren’t just for the workplace anymore – they can be very useful at home too. Consider getting one or more of the devices today to see how they can help out you and the other members of your household.
